Designing Mixed Media Artefacts for Public Settings

چکیده
This paper describes how principles which are emerging from social scientific studies of people’s interaction with mixed media artefacts in public places have been used to support the development of two installations, the second of which is a long term museum exhibit. Our principles highlight the design of ‘emergent collaborative value’, ‘layers of noticeability’ and ‘structures of motivation’ to create an ‘ecology of participation’ in installations. We describe how our first installation was used as a ‘research vehicle’ that guided and shaped the design of the museum installation. We also provide an account of how people interact with our installations and how this analysis has shaped their design. The paper closes with some general remarks about the challenges there are for the design of collaborative installations and the extent to which we have met them.

Frameworks such as activity theory, distributed cognition and structuration theory, amongst others, have shown that detailed study of contextual settings where users work (or live) can help the design of interactive systems. However, these frameworks do not adequately focus on accounting for the materiality (and embodiment) of the contextual settings. Within the IST-EU funded AMIDA project (Aug...

متن کاملThe PLANTS System: Enabling Mixed Societies of Communicating Plants and Artefacts
In this paper we discuss research work that enables the development of mixed societies of communicating plants and artefacts. PLANTS is an EUfunded Research and Development project, which aims to investigate methods of creating “interfaces” between artefacts and plants in order to enable people to form mixed, interacting (potentially co-operating) communities. Amongst others the project aims to...
متن کاملPADLs: supporting digital scholarship in digital libraries
This paper introduces digital scholarship: aprocess inwhich individuals perform all scholarly work electronically, working entirely with digital media. A proposal is made for patron-augmenteddigital libraries (PADLs): a class of digital libraries designed to support the digital scholarship of its patrons. PADLs not only provide facilities for search and retrieval of library artefacts, but also ...
متن کاملPerformative Uses Of Space In Mixed Media Environments
Moving computing and interfaces from the virtuality of the screen into the physical environment of space and artefacts not only enables people to interact in an embodied and performative way, it also provides the interfaces with a spatial dimension. As a result, computing becomes embedded in people’s physical and social world, opening up possibilities to actively stage their own interaction thr...
